About Us

Looking for great colours, great paint and great painters?

You’ve come to the right place. Paint the Town Green was London’s first environmentally-friendly decorating company. Founded by Phil Robinson in 2007, it was cited in the national press as a “firm which defines a new species of tradesperson”. Paint the Town Green offers a bespoke decorating service, a truly personal service and we also have a fabulous range of designer eco-paint all named
after rock and roll tracks paying homage to Phil’s love of music.

Paint the Town Green is in effect a complete decorating outfit. Whatever it is you need for your home, paint, decorating advice, a decorating quote or colour consultancy we love to. With over 20 years of experience under our belt, our knowledge is vast. We can help colour match Victorian radiators, hang wallpaper, paint kitchens and even help with the odd extra to help your project along. If a radiator needs shifting so we can decorate behind it or floor boards need sanding, we can draft in people to help or recommend you good people to do the job. It’s about ensuring your project goes smoothly with minimal hassle, stress and disruption to your home. Phil’s team work to exacting decorating standards. We aim always to be polite, efficient and tidy up as we go. We make efforts to recycle everything we possibly can too.

We often get asked ‘do you only decorating using your own paints?’. When in fact, we will use any paint that is specified. Working with many interior designers, we have experience of most paint brands and colours although we would of course rather use our own. All paint colours are available in three interior finishes: matt emulsion, wipeable and eggshell. Eco without compromise, Paint the Town Green water-based paints are high quality, quick drying, and have the lowest possible levels of VOCs and are free from paint fumes. No sooner is a room decorated, it is safe to re-inhabit. No airing or nose pegs required. With 42 colours in the range, we get excellent feedback from builders, decorators, carpenters and furniture up-cyclers. We don’t like to blow our trumpet but we are proud of what we do. With Damion Hirst’s London gallery, Conran’s The Shop at Bluebird, The Blue Bar at the Berkley, Marc Jacob’s Mayfair store and Eileen Fisher to name but a few alongside the very many real homes we have worked in, we like to think of ourselves as the little painting company that thinks big. So, if you think we can be of help, please get in touch. We work on all size projects in and around London, residential and commercial. We’d love to hear from you. Paint the Town Green is a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen and Which? Trusted Trader.

Our Founder

Paint the Town Green is over ten years old. Founder Phil Robinson is a former musician who initially used to decorate in between gigs. A victim of his own success working with Sarah Beeny at one point, he set up Paint the Town Green to manage customer demand and despite a burgeoning music career touring with well-known bands (you’d be impressed if you knew who!) he made the hard decision to close his piano lid to be more at home with the family.

When he needed paint for his young daughter’s room, he found there was very little eco-choice on the market. Not willing to compromise on the quality of the paint, he launched his own line. The range is of course named after songs. We love interior design at Paint the Town Green but Phil also thinks it should be fun. Which is why Phil would never name a paint ‘Pea Green’. Instead, he’d call it Wonderful World.

Phil spent hours naming his colours, preferring the more cryptic references like Pictures of You. As well of course – the clue is in the name – Paint the Town Green has and always has had very strong environmental-friendly ethics. Phil has always been mindful of waste and the company tries to recycle as much as we possible. His paints are of course eco too. Manufactured in an eco-friendly steam powered factory in Iceland, they have the lowest possible levels of VOCs.

The range is small compared to other high street brands. However, we find some customers prefer this as it can simplify the process of choosing colour. When Phil opened the showroom in 2016 on Allfarthing Lane in Wandsworth, he made the conscious decision to reduce the chart to the colours that people really wanted, which his many years of decorating people’s homes had taught him.

As a result, he is proud that 80-90% of the chart gets selected regularly. In 2017 Phil met Nicky Haslam and not long after launched Nicky’s exclusive collection ‘The Stones’ bringing the range up to 42 colours. These days, Phil can sometimes be seen donning his painting overalls and getting stuck in ‘on the tools’ when needed or in the showroom busily attending to customers or dashing out to do quotes. He turns the radio up always and has been known to burst into song on a good day. He has recently moved to Hampshire and decorated top to toe with Paint the Town Green paint.

Phil Robinson, Founder

Phil is a jolly nice chap. He has an unbeatable knowledge of decorating and he’s great at colour consulting too, pairing up colours that you might not have thought of but which he has seen work. Privileged enough to have worked with some of the very best interior designers, he is often asked to project manage refurbishments too. He is very involved still in the day to day running of the company and works to improve always on the services we provide. He thinks big so he never sits on his laurels. On a Wednesday he has to leave on the dot to get back to Hampshire in time to coach his son’s football team.

Jo Cyphus, Showroom

Jo handles all the marketing side of things. She can turn her hand also to colour consultancy and knows more about decorating than she ever imagine. She is kept company in the showroom with friendly, fluffy Millie who occasionally stars in an Instagram story. She turns the radio down so she can concentrate. Phil turns it up. They both agree on Radio 2 for tunes although have differing view on Led Zepplin’s Stairway to Heaven. One of her favourite colours is Purple Rain as it’s such a dramatic aubergine and has potential to be used with fabulous effect.

Katie Baring, Showroom

Katie is who we rely on for styling, colour consultancy and building relationships with the likes of kitchen companies and interior designers who we love to work with. Having run her own refurbishment business previously, and a qualified interior designer, she has a very keen eye and just knows instinctively how to put a room together well. She also has a dog, a little Dachshund, <X>. Katie has lots of colours from the Paint the Town Green range in her house, including Ruby, Fade to Grey and Peridot, which all look stunning. She couldn’t choose a favourite colour though – she has tried but she just can’t.
