10 Things to Remember When Painting Your Home

Painting your home is a great way to freshen up the look of your living space, and it can also be a fun and rewarding experience.

However, it's important to keep in mind that painting is a time-consuming and detail-oriented process that requires careful planning and execution.

Here are 10 things to remember when painting your home:

1. Choose the right paint

Choosing the right paint is crucial for a successful painting project. Different types of paint are designed for different surfaces and finishes, so choosing the right paint for your particular needs is important. For example, if you're painting a high-traffic area, such as a hallway or staircase, you'll want to choose a paint that is durable and easy to clean.

In rooms with lots of humidity - such as bathrooms or kitchens -  a regular matt finish will not repel moisture so a wipeable alternative or eggshell/ satin finishes work better.

2. Prepare the surface

Preparing the surface is another critical step in the painting process. Before you begin painting, you'll need to thoroughly sand the surface to create a smooth and even surface for painting.

Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for preparing the surface before you begin painting.

3. Protect your furniture and floors

Painting can be messy, so it's important to protect your furniture and floors from paint drips and spills. Cover your furniture with plastic or drop cloths, and use painter's tape to protect skirting boards, window sills, and other surfaces. You may also want to lay down a drop cloth or plastic sheeting to protect your floors.

At Paint the Town Green, we use B-Corp Certified Eco Union Biodegradable dust sheets, drop tape and plastic-free paper masking tape.

4. Use the right tools

Using the right tools is essential for achieving a high-quality finish. Invest in high-quality brushes, rollers, and other tools to ensure a smooth and even application of paint. You'll also need a paint tray, painter's tape, sandpaper, and a ladder or step stool, depending on the height of the surface you're painting.

5. Prime the surface (if necessary)

Priming the surface is an important step in the painting process, especially if you're painting a surface that has never been painted before. Primer helps to seal the surface and create a smooth and even base for the paint. It can also help to cover up stains and other imperfections on the surface.

6. Apply the paint

When it comes time to apply the paint, make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the type of paint you're using. Use a brush or roller to apply the paint in thin and even coats, making sure to overlap each stroke slightly to create a seamless finish. Don't overload the brush or roller with paint, as this can lead to drips and an uneven application.

7. Allow time for the paint to dry

Allowing time for the paint to dry is crucial for achieving a high-quality finish. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying time, and avoid touching or disturbing the painted surface until it's completely dry. You may also need to apply a second coat of paint, depending on the type of paint and the desired finish.

8. Clean up properly

Proper clean-up is an important step in the painting process. Use warm, soapy water to clean your brushes and rollers, and make sure to rinse them thoroughly to remove all traces of paint.

Dispose of any used paint cans and other materials properly, according to your local regulations.

9. Don't forget the details

When painting your home, it's important not to overlook the details. Make sure to paint around door frames, window frames, and other trim, and use a small brush to touch up any areas that need it. You may also want to consider painting your ceiling, as this can help to brighten up the room and create a more cohesive look.

10. Take your time

Perhaps the most important thing to remember when painting your home is to take your time. It's tempting to rush through a room when you have a spare evening.

But proper preparation, execution and clean-up take time and it's worth ensuring you're satisfied with a job well done.
