Our Favourite Sustainable Paint Brands

At Paint The Town Green, we want to help drive positive change within the decorating industry. Part of this involves collaborating with like-minded people and brands to improve sustainability and trade standards, whilst providing the best service to our decorating clients.

Here are four of our favourite paint brands that offer incredible products, whilst working hard to improve the industry:

2

Graphenstone

Bringing back the tradition of using kiln-fired, locally sourced lime to create natural paints, Graphenstone delivers products for the ‘green generation’. Some of their paints even absorb CO2 rather than emit it!

Their factories are powered by renewable sources, paint buckets are both recycled and recyclable, and water is conserved and re-used during the production process to minimise waste.

Graphenstone strives to ‘Paint Different’, turning the paint industry around through innovative and sustainable thinking.

We love: GrafClean Matt White

Made from natural vegetable resin for a super-easy and smooth application, this flat matt white is perfect for freshening up ceilings and walls for a clean and classic finish. It’s strengthened on the molecular level with graphene, a Nobel-prize-winning discovery that helps this paint offer extra durability and performance!

3

Edward Bulmer

Using ‘gentle chemistry’, Edward Bulmer combines rich mineral and earth pigments like chalk and clay with plant-based ingredients to create durable, odourless, and plastic-free paint. It’s a vegan decorator’s dream!

Their palette of luxury colours not only look good but feel good too. And it’s all handmade in their Herefordshire workshop.

We love: Mummy

It’s fun to bring a bit of history into the home, and that’s exactly what this fascinating shade offers.

Up until the late 19th Century, it was fashionable to use paint made from actual mummified remains! Even though this macabre process has long since gone out of favour, there’s no reason that the colour has to… Edward Bulmer describes this shade of brown as ‘warm and inviting, perfect for a snug or cosy sitting room.’ But don’t tell your friends or they’ll all want some - Mum’s the word!

4 v2

Lick

Not only do Lick offer water-based and low VOC paints, but they also sell climate neutral tools that are all recyclable, compostable or biodegradable. What’s more, they also donate 178 litres of clean water for every tin of paint sold!

Their paints are made to order to reduce waste, and the company has met a rigorous set of environmental and social standards to achieve B-Corp certification.

We love: Green 13

Taken from their ‘LA’ colour palette, this playful green is a classic sage with added brightness. The yellow and white undertones help to lighten any space, adding a splash of optimism.

5

 COAT

One of the things we love most about COAT is their clever use of ‘colour swatches’. Rather than sending out single-use paint tester pots, COAT has developed 100% colour-accurate swatches that are adhesive-free and recyclable. Simply peel-and-stick to get an idea of how the colour might look in situ!

Once you’ve purchased your selected colour, you’ll be helping the planet (and broader society), as COAT is a regenerative business that gives back more than it takes.

We love: Adulting

This dark, deep-greyed teal is described as ‘strong with a big mortgage to pay’. Perfect for a feature wall, get it in a flat and chalky matt finish to hide imperfections, or choose soft sheen for moisture resistance and easy cleaning.

Now that you’re clued up on which sustainable paints to buy to minimise your environmental impact, why not follow through with the decorating process? Check out our blog for some tips on environmental-conscious decorating here.
