What is Limewash?

Made from natural limestone that has been crushed, burned and mixed with water, it creates a soft, chalky finish that feels both organic and timeless. Unlike modern plastic-based paints, limewash penetrates the surface, allowing walls to breathe and age gracefully over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Limewash is made from natural ingredients (natural slaked lime), and allows walls breathe, so moisture can escape rather than becoming trapped which can help reduce damp and mould. It gives a beautifully soft, matt texture that is known for giving a rustic or vintage aesthetic. Since it bonds into the surface rather than simply coating it, it should not peel or blister like some conventional paints can.

Limewash is surprisingly durable depending on the surface, exposure, and how well it’s applied. If applied over porous materials such as render or brick, limewash is very durable since it bonds with the substrate. Limewash can also be applied over previously painted walls, however you will not get the level of durability that you would with a conventional paint.

Limewash is most effective on porous materials like stone, brick, plaster or render, where it can be absorbed rather than just sitting on top. If surfaces have been sealed or are very smooth, a bit of prep may be needed to help limewash adhere and perform at its best.
Maintenance is simple and gentle. Dust or wipe with a soft cloth; do not scrub, use strong chemicals or pressure washing. For small worn spots, you can refresh by applying a thin new layer, which blends well with the existing finish without needing to strip it off.
